How the date of Easter Sunday is decided

Easter is the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon falling on or after 21 March, calculated by the anniversary computus. This puts it between 22 March and 25 April. Eastern Orthodox Easter uses the Julian calendar for the same rule and usually falls on a different date.

That makes it a computed date: there is no fixed day and no simple weekday rule, so it has to be worked out from a formula or a calendar of its own each year. In 2027 it works out as Sunday 28 March.

Easter Sunday is an observance rather than a federal holiday.
